Overview

Hyperbaric Training Associates (HTA) and Cornerstone Medical Services (CMS) are presenting a unique diving medical program for diving and allied healthcare professionals.

HTA has developed a complete Diver Medical Technician program to prepare the student for the rigors of emergency medical field care.

It is also an excellent class for physicians to be introduced to the principles and physiology of diving medicine and the hyperbaric environment.

The Association of Diving Contractors (ADC) recommends that every commercial diving operation include at least one Diving Medical Technician per shift.

Many Public Safety, Fire Department, and Law Enforcement Dive Rescue / Recovery organizations require advanced emergency medical personnel on-site during operations.

Updated regulations from OSHA require medically trained personnel on-site during operations.  In many states, the OSHA regulations have been adopted for "Public Safety" divers.

Due to the location of our program, students may have the rare and unique opportunity to  act as "chamber operators" and "chamber tenders" for actual DCS Type II patients.

The Cornerstone Hyperbaric Chamber staff has treated thousands of cases of Decompression Sickness.  Most of these patients are commercial lobster divers, however; we do see our share of recreational divers.  The majority of the commercial diver cases are severe Type II Decompression Sickness.  This type of actual "hands-on" experience is priceless. These clinical sessions are conducted under the strict and constant supervision of the DMT Instructor/Coordinator and/or Chamber physicians.

The program is designed and presented in a modular format.  It allows an individual with no prior medical training to progress to a Diver Medical Technician certification.

The needs of the diving industry are demanding in the extreme sense.  Safety regulations and compliance issues are a major concern.  The potential for injury is obvious and many regulatory and industry standards setting agencies have addressed this in new and tightened regulations.  An individual with advanced diving medical and hyperbaric training obviously is preferred.

The Programs

The Cornerstone Medical Services Program has two basic modules or components.  With this program, the student can build the knowledge and experience required for the rigors of emergent medical field suited to his or her needs.

The first component is the Emergency Medical Technician Program.  This is the current 144 Hour U.S. DOT program taught in the United States.  It is required for anyone operating on an ambulance in the United States and is the minimum medical training requirement for Diver Medical Technician certification.  The EMT Program includes advanced airway, defibrillation, intramuscular injection, medication administration, glucose readings, nebulized inhalers, and all optional skills allowed by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.  Also included in this program is the required "Weapons of Mass Destruction, Chemical and Biological Weapons First Response Awareness" module.

The second component is Module 16 of National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology, the Diver Medical Technician Program.  This program has recently undergone MAJOR changes in curriculum and practical standards.

These standards and practices will be REQUIRED by the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology in January of 2010.  There will no longer be "Basic" and "Advanced" Diver Medical Technicians as of that date.  Hyperbaric Training Associates can proudly state that we have been teaching this advanced curriculum for years!  This is an 80 hour course, which will provide the student with knowledge and skills in the specialized field of diving and "remote" medicine.

It covers gas laws, diving physics and physiology, diagnosis and treatment of diving related illness and injuries, multi lock hyperbaric chamber operations and tending, along with numerous advanced medical interventions to treat definitively, an injured diver or crewman.  This is also an excellent introduction course for physicians and nurses interested in pursuing a specialty in Hyperbaric Medicine.

Completion of this program will qualify for DMT status with the NBDHMT.

Participants

This program is designed for Physicians, Paramedics, EMTs, DMTs, Diving Medical Officers, Chamber Supervisors, Nurses, Clinical Hyperbaric Technicians, Rescue Personnel, and Diving Professionals, both Commercial and Recreational.

Students with no medical training will be able to complete both the Emergency Medical Technician Program and the Diver Medical Technician Program within six weeks.

The various modules of the program will provide CEUs and CMEs for the various allied health care professional.

CME/CEU Credits

  • NBDHMT Module 16, for Allied Medical Personnel to become DMTs.

  • Recertification hours for NBDHMT DMTs.

  • CEUs are available to all other allied healthcare professionals through their respective organizations including 24 CEUs for NREMT recertification.
