Air Transportation

From the United States

You have several options for travel to the Honduran Bay Island of Roatan.  We would recommend that you attempt to book a DIRECT FLIGHT to the island.  This will eliminate the hassles of the mainland transfers and several stops prior to reaching Roatan.  Additionally, you should get all your luggage with no delays.

Your Options:

  • Book your flight through Bahia Tours, 1.800.227.3483.  Ask for Vivian or Haydee and inform them that you are a DMT student.
  • Go online to EXPEDIA.COM or TRAVELOCITY.COM to book your flights. These two sites typically have great deals.
  • Go online and book directly with the airline.

The following airlines provide DIRECT Flights to Roatan:

  • Continental Airlines flies direct from Houston to Roatan on Saturdays.
  • Delta Airline flies direct from Atlanta on Saturdays.

From Europe

Several airlines fly from Europe to Miami, then connecting to San Pedro Sula-Roatan with TACA Airlines. You can also make your reservation through your personal Travel Agent.

Island Flights

If you need to travel to the mainland of Honduras during your stay, Anthony's Key Resort staff can arrange your flights.

Entry into Honduras

A valid passport is required for entry into Honduras.

Extended Stay in Honduras

You are allowed up to 90 days on your visa to stay in Honduras.

Students attending the full 6 week program must make sure the immigration personnel provide for at least 60 days or you will be required to pay this additional $35.00 fee.

Departing Honduras

A $38.00 USD departure tax is charged when leaving Honduras.

Luggage

Since 9.11.2001, the airlines have tightened security and requirements for passenger luggage.

All passengers (with the exception of those flying on “infant” tickets) are entitled to two pieces of checked luggage if flying in Economy Class, or three pieces if flying in First or  Business Class. Each piece of luggage must comply with size and weight restrictions of a maximum of 50 pounds (70 pounds for First and Business Class) and 62 linear inches (height + width + length) per piece. Upon payment of a surcharge, oversized baggage up to a maximum of 100 pounds and 85 linear inches per piece will be accepted.

In addition to checked baggage, passengers are entitled to one piece of carry-on baggage with a maximum weight of 22 lbs / 10 kgs and maximum measurements of 9x14x22 linear inches, and one (only) of the following items: a coat, hat, handbag, bag for baby articles, laptop computer, briefcase, or similarly sized articles. Carry-on baggage must be secured in the areas designated by flight attendants.

Honduran Taxes

Currently, sales taxes in Honduras are approximately 12%.

Tourist Tax, which includes sales tax and other "stuff" is 16%.  This is normally added to any bill at resorts, restaurants, etc.

Currently there is discussion with the Honduran Government to remove these taxes because of CAFTA, Central American Free Trade Agreement.  It is unknown when this will take effect.

Taxis and Buses

Transportation on the Island of Roatan is always available.  Taxi cabs are available for about $2.00 USD from the resort to West End or Coxen Hole.  Small mini-buses also are available for a reduced cost.

Rental Cars

Roatan has several car rental agencies with cars, pickup trucks, jeeps, or motorcycles available.  Make SURE all papers and registration on the vehicle are current!  Be aware that gasoline prices on the island are currently at about $4.50 per gallon.

Island Tours

Anthony's Key Resort can arrange for Island Tours for all guests.

Mainland Tours

Anthony's Key Resort can arrange for Mainland Tours for all guests. These include whitewater rafting, eco-tours, and tours of the Mayan Ruins of Copan.

Telephones and Internet Services

General Information

1. Due to current security measures, you'll need to allow more time for check-in, security screening and boarding flights. Please check with your airline prior to departure for the latest recommended arrival times and security guidelines. It is also recommended you have a government-issued picture ID available at all times, as well as a printed itinerary if you're using an electronic ticket.

2. Unfortunately the airlines do not always deliver your luggage on time.  This is a major problem with TACA if you are coming in from a mainland Honduras connection.  They do not lose your luggage, it just gets left behind to be delivered a day or two later.

THIS IS NOT THE RESORT'S FAULT...PLEASE DO NOT TAKE OUT YOUR FRUSTRATIONS ON THE ANTHONY'S KEY STAFF...THEY REALLY DO GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO GET EVERYTHING DELIVERED.

The resort will do as much as they can to accommodate you with regards to equipment and other items, but please carry in your hand-luggage the following:
1. Extra pair of clothes
2. Medication, contact lenses, prescription masks, etc
3. C-card: You can not dive if you do not have your C-Card...NO EXCEPTIONS!

3. Make sure your personal information is on all pieces of baggage as well as inside your luggage.  If luggage is borrowed, please make sure identification is your own, not that of the person you borrowed it from!

4. Green luggage tags provided by Anthony's Key Resort should be used on all luggage. This will help our personnel in Roatan identify your luggage and facilitate clearance through customs upon arrival.

5. U.S. citizens are required to have a valid U.S. passport.  Residents of all other countries should check with the Honduran Embassy/Consulate prior to leaving for specific entry requirements.

6. Please set aside U.S. $38.00 per person for airport departure tax from Roatan.

Packing Tips:
1. Due to water conservation concerns, beach towels are not provided by the resort. Please be sure to pack your own beach towel, or consider buying a souvenir beach towel at the resort.
  2. Insect repellant is recommended, and is also sold at the resort. The sand fleas, "no-see-ums", are plentiful on the island. And they are vicious.
  3. Pack light-weight, comfortable clothing. Casual clothing is acceptable throughout the resort.
  4. Long pants are required for horseback riding.
  5. Hats and sunscreen are recommended.
  6. Travelers checks and major credit cards are accepted at the resort.
  7. Aspirin, antihistamine, Imodium, anti-itch creams, and any other treatments your physician may prescribe or recommend for foreign travel.
  8. For DMT students staying for extended programs, you are advised to bring rain gear.
